2005 DMC World DJ Championship - Australian Finals
Live acts confirmed
The DMC World DJ Championships are renowned for showcasing upcoming Australian talent and this year's competition is no exception.
Phrase grew up in the suburbs of Melbourne, where his love of hip hop kicked off in his early teens when he began to listen to the likes of Ice T, NWA, Ice Cube, and 2Pac. Whilst he was a certified fan of these US rappers, it wasn’t until he began listening to community radio and new Australian rappers that he started to feel a real affinity with hip hop as an art-form. Skip forward some years and Phrase is set to release his debut single ‘Here Now’ on September 5th and album ‘Talk With Force’ on September 18th. For his DMC show, Phrase will be showcasing live for the first time a number of tracks from his album.
With a sound best described as ‘porno funk’, Scarz on 45 have for a long time been regarded as one of Australia’s premier hip hop acts and most certainly are long time heroes within the Melbourne hip hop scene. Originally formed in 1992 under the name of Wicked Mindz, the group consists of DJ Rubz, Sherlok and Troy. Their debut album ‘Skin Graft’, helped them cement their reputation but it’s on the stage that Scarz On 45 really come alive. For their show for the DMC, Scarz will be showcasing new tracks from their up-and-coming, long-awaited EP titled ‘45 Degrees Of Separation’.
The ‘main event’ of the evening will be the competition to decide which DJ will represent Australia at the World finals in London. Over 30 DJs from around the country will take part in a 3-minute elimination round starting at 8:00pm. From these, the judges will pick the best six to go thru to the final stage which starts at 11:30pm. Adelaide’s Staen 1 has won the title for the last 2 years and will be back again to defend his crown. Staen 1 finished sixth in the world finals last year and is keen to go better this time around. Prizes on the night include a flight and accommodation package to the UK, CD decks from Technics, headphones, record bags and stacks of good stuff from our generous sponsors and a special door prize for one lucky patron.
Hosting proceedings and keeping the event moving along will be Troy from Scarz on 45 and Reason from Obese Records. There will be a breaking show courtesy of the BurnCity Breakers and The Freshsox crew, DJs include Flagrant and interstate guests.
