The masks we create become the outer layers that protect us, our exterior is a shallow shield and its decoration irrelevant, yet its maintenance is essential as we constantly work to alter our appearances. “War Paint” is a body of work that beginsto examine the meaning and allure of that second skin. Ears presents a dramatic new series of brightly adorned visagesthat jump from the darkness, these portraits are obscured and explore the barriers of protection that keep us safe.

Yasumase YONE Yonehare is undoubtedly one of the most dynamic and influential magazine editors and photographers in Japan.

During the 90s Yonehara’s work with the iconic Egg Magazine was instrumental in the emergence of kogyaru (Japanese schoolgirl) culture into the global consciousness.

Yonehara’s signature lo-fi sexy photographic style was established though a collection of erotic Fujifilm cheki shots for Smart Girls with some of Tokyo’s hottest models. The unprecedented success of his first book, a folio of these Smart Girl portraits, bestowed him instant fame.

It was at this point that Yonehara’s sphere of influence became global, with brands such as American Apparel appropriating his unique photographic style for use in advertising campaigns. A new genre of editorial photography was born, founded on Yonehara’s instant Polaroid style.

In 2007 Yonehara launched the online publication cexwork.com which blends erotic art with blogs by influential photographers, friends and tastemakers from around the world.

Yone has spent recent years exploring themes of eroticism, continuity within discontinuity and the power of repetition in a series of acclaimed photographic exhibition.

A Creative Director sought by fashion labels, music groups and advertising agencies around the world, Yonehara brings a unique aesthetic, vision and Japanese pop-culture sensibility to the world of art.

In September 2010 Backwoods Gallery is honored to be hosting Shake That Ass by Yasamasa Yonehara, an exhibition of original photography and installations.

		SUMMARY:Meggs - Sons of Privilege
LOCATION:Lo-Fi Collective 383 Bourke St, Darlinghurst, 2010, New South Wales, Australia
		URL:http://niceproduce.com/events/meggs+-+sons+of+privilege
		DESCRIPTION:
Based on the lyric ‘we don’t want to be slaves to the sons of privilege’, this new collection of artworks and installation by Meggs reflects a freedom of thought and action and a frustration with institution and authority, be it governments, laws or religion. For Meggs, ‘Sons of privilege’, questions personal freedoms and liberties, the right to challenge ideas, politics and blind patriotism. Freedom of thought, self-expression and independence should be admired and we shouldn’t bow to the pressure of social stigmas, expectations, comparison or greed. This exhibition follows Meggs’ sell-out show ‘King for a day’ in Melbourne and Hong Kong and is a continuation of the fragile nature of power, fame and fortune.

Initially recognised for his multi-layer street stencils and posters, Meggs has become a well recognised and respected member of Australia\'s street art culture. With a background of graffiti, skateboarding and graphic design Meggs has developed his painting skills from street to galleries with a mixture of aerosol based character work and stencil based expressive canvases. Being a member of the renowned \'Everfresh\' studio, a unique collective/studio space in Melbourne, has helped Meggs to develop skills in aerosol painting and screen printing and participate in numerous large scale Everfresh mural works.

His street work, although often playful references to 1980\'s skate graphics, still has an element of menace and much of his street and gallery work explores a notion of \'duality of self\'. Reflecting on personal experience Meggs produces energetic and subverted collages of hybrid characters & pop culture symbology that question the notion of morals, rights and actions of the individual and society at large.

Meggs has spread his street and gallery work as far as London, NYC, LA, SF, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Paris and he has contributed to various projects with the Rebel Club in Singapore, Stussy Australia and numerous Gallery exhibitions around the world, as well as having artworks included in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Australia and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. A continued passion for graffiti, pop-art and abstract expressionism places Meggs as one of Australia’s pioneering street to gallery artists.

		SUMMARY:Inhabited Times - Fletcher Andersen
LOCATION:At Large Gallery 208 High Street, Northcote, 3070, Victoria, Australia
		URL:http://niceproduce.com/events/inhabited+times+-+fletcher+andersen
		DESCRIPTION:
"Inhabited Times" is the first solo exhibition from Fletcher Andersen, presenting both new and unexhibited works from a vast, conceptual world building project over a decade in the making.

Fletcher, out of Perth and now Melbourne-based, has steadily built the dark, solar system spanning demesne of The Known. Adrift with the remnants of a technologically-rich past, wandered by the disparate remains of a xenophobic humanity; the remnants of the failed Singularity struggles to discover a route with which to rebuild life, albeit hyper-evolved.

Shining a light on humanity and its absorption of technology, Fletcher marks our vicissitudes in bionics, nanotechnology and artificial intelligence. He draws upon Singularity Theory, the concept that the pace of technological development approaches a crescendo whereat life inevitably transforms to accommodate advances in science – irrevocably altering civilisation, society and the biosystem.

Presenting a wide range of illustrations, prints and visuals, Inhabited Times is the first exploration into the vagaries, alternatives and deviations of a future civilisation in which the concept of humanity is a lost, idiosyncratic aberrative.”

		SUMMARY:SomethingMistakenForNorhing
LOCATION:The Curiosity Shoppe 855 Valencia Street, San Francisco, 94110, CA, United States
		URL:http://niceproduce.com/events/somethingmistakenfornorhing
		DESCRIPTION:
Have a great day—a phrase we have all heard, and probably said ourselves, at one time or another. This, along with so many other expressions have become as cliché as our daily interactions, their intended message so diluted from over-use, that we end up retaining very little of the actual meaning of what is most often said and heard. But as the repetition continues, empty of sentiment, we are conditioned to pay little attention to that which is uttered habitually and heard constantly. If we could only isolate ourselves from how we perceive these phrases, and experience them literally, as if for the first time, we might actually find that they have the potential of expressing something truly heartfelt.

The Curiosity Shoppe of San Francisco presents SOMETHINGMISTAKENFORNOTHING, a solo exhibition of new works by Scott Albrecht. The show features a series of three-dimensional pictographic wooden pieces, hand-cut and stained as well as typographic studies on vintage pieces of paper and wood— created using paint, pen & ink, and screen printing.

Albrecht\'s style of type-based imagery and hand-drawn lettering hints toward the idea of the discardable in human interaction, explored through a collection of familiar thoughts and phrases that seem relatively insignificant in their ubiquity but actually hold a great deal of meaning when interpreted at true value.

The idea of the discardable is not only a unifying theme within the body of work but also a tangible quality through out the site-specific installation created by the artist within the gallery space. Almost all of the materials used came from second-hand or found sources, adding a genuine element of dialogue between the work, viewer, and environment.

Each of the paper pieces in the show were created using pages which have been removed from discarded books, hand selected for their aged and discolored edges. Similarly, the fading intentional sentiment of the words rendered onto these pages, are restored by the artist in a fresh and genuine voice.

		SUMMARY:My Illusions Architect
LOCATION:Gorker Gallery 395 Gore Street, Fitzroy, 3065, Victoria, Australia
		URL:http://niceproduce.com/events/my+illusions+architect
		DESCRIPTION:
"My Illusions Architect" is a new series of works that sees the introduction of a dramatic and exciting turn in direction for Jae Copp. For the past 12 months Jae has undergone an experimentation process of both, medium and technical skills, involving various paper treatments, hand stitching and intricate brush based illustrations. Jae has long used allegories and abstract twists to take personal and social views both, good and bad out of context, into a surreal, and at times almost semi- nonsensical way. Through this series the artist evokes stories of a non-definitive space in time that reflect a post- apocalyptic era, as central figures take form to mimic learning\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s of a bygone civilization, in pursuit of redeeming social harmony, respect and understanding for one another and responsibility for the planet they now inhabit. Armed to the teeth with the much needed strength and environmental compassion, his characters begin repairs on the broken in prospects of a new beginning.

Please join us for the opening of Josh Robenstone’s latest solo exhibition ‘LA/NY and other American Adventures’ on Friday 20th August, 6-9pm.

NY/LA and other American Adventures’ is a retrospective journey and a portrait of contemporary American society, telling a story that is both fact and fiction. This abstract portrayal of the American way of life weaves together day to day experiences and encounters that span two decades.

LA’s gaping wide roads and obscurely narrow footpaths confirm the dominance of the motor vehicle. The city is shrouded in smog, but the bright sunshine makes you forget. In New York, a different pace and feeling. A city of people and interaction. Faces all day on the crowded footpaths, vibrant and engaged. The contrast between America’s two largest cities feeds a desire to look beneath the surface at the fringes of American society for further understanding.

Shot over numerous trips from 1990 – 2010, Josh Robenstone’s NY/LA and other American Adventures will be on display at Backwoods Gallery from Friday the 20th of August until September 1st 2010.

		SUMMARY:de MéXICO
LOCATION:China Heights L3, 16-28 Foster Street, Surry Hills, 2010, New South Wales, Australia
		URL:http://niceproduce.com/events/de+m%c3%a9xico
		DESCRIPTION:
China Heights is proud to present \'de MéXICO\', a series of photographs taken throughout Mexico by Lance Richardson. The photographs reveal a sense of life lived to a thousand different songs, in direct defiance of any official anthem that would have every person dance to the same packaged tune on command.

Mexico exists across borders. In popular Western culture is it always an Other – over there, over the wall, outside regulated social conventions. In San Diego: work and reward. In Tijuana: licentiousness and ruin. Prescription drugs loom large in this picture, but what is Mexico, really – this idea of Mexico – but a drug itself? The fortunate wallow in their fortune by denigrating a wicked, undeserving neighbour. This is not an American illusion. We are all party to this imaginary Mexico.

These photographs take a tentative step in another direction. Shot around the country – desert ghost town, urban metropolis, the border, Caribbean tourist utopia – they aim to refigure an increasingly black and white national portrait by etching in a little of the grey. Or, more appropriately, the colour. No piñatas, no fetishised poverty, and by no means an exhaustive project, Lance sees this as an opportunity to correct a myopic view of a distant friend.

Self-taught Sydney artist, Trent Whitehead will present a new body of work at Monster Children Gallery. With this series, Whitehead attempts to represent a disparate and essentially unusual view of past and future.

Just like a dream is the mere sorting and cataloguing of a day\'s events by our subconscious, Whitehead\'s paintings on wooden panels are subtly filled with experiences of his own existence. The wondrous and often humorous paintings make up one half of the exhibition. The other half consists of his distinctive masks, which have become a significant component of his artist practice. The masks, lending themselves to the life-giving process of construction, are three dimensional embodiments of the delinquents from his paintings. Pieced together from geometric shapes and painted with the same Memphis-like colour palette and omnipresent patterning as the paintings, a certain intensity and vitality is introduced.

From Queensland via Berlin and East Coast Australia, Georg Whelan has made it down to Melbourne with his solo show “Brown Magic.” Heavily informed by the artist’s travels and verging on documentary, this show takes influence from both the mundane and the extreme – be it bums, business men, advertising, the internet, high art or tags in suburban kebab shop bathrooms. With the aim to incorporate real life as much as possible while ‘capturing the rhythm of the world in order to respond to it’ Georg’s hyper-reality, layered with myth and false narrative, brings attention to contrasts in contemporary human life that are often blurred.

		SUMMARY:Reka - Outside Infinity.
LOCATION:19 Karen 19 Karen Ave, Mermaid BeachGold-Coast, 4218, QLD, Australia
		URL:http://niceproduce.com/events/reka+-+outside+infinity.
		DESCRIPTION:
I have always been intrigued with the Buddhist belief of reincarnation and the continuation of your soul in another lifetime. The concept behind ‘Outside Infinity’ explores the notion of the infinite abyss known as the universe, contrasted with the fragility of our life. In the fabric of time, our existence would be compared to a speck of dust. Not even. My core focus is to portray the journey of the conscious human life and the subconscious connection with elements such as fate, time, the dream-world and reality. I like the idea that your soul could actually be made up of many different lives that connected throughout the ages. The dream world could be your existence in a parallel universe, and vice versa. Although this exhibition is a personal journey of my core beliefs, I have intentionally left doors wide open for the viewer’s interpretation and personal reflection on their own life. Does everything happen for a reason? How long does forever last for? How many lifetimes have I seen? Was I at the beginning? I think so. We all were.

SHORT BIO:

James Reka is a young contemporary painter and artist based in Melbourne. With influences in pop culture, cartoons and illustration, Reka creates his own world of mysterious creatures that communicate though colour and movement, based around the style of abstracted fantasy and surrealism. Since 2002, Reka has established himself as a pioneer in Melbourne’s burgeoning street art scene that has become a successful exhibitor of his work, both in Melbourne, interstate and overseas. His work has recently been acquisitioned by the National Gallery of Australia for their permanent collection, and over the years has curated numerous shows focusing on supporting Australian and International artists.

AN EXHIBITION BY KARL MAIER AND CRAIG REDMAN

Opening Night: THURSDAY 1ST JULY 6.00PM

Continues: 2ND JULY - 16TH JULY, 2010.

About the Show:

'PICK ME UP' is the result of a year-long visual conversation between Karl Maier in Sydney and Craig Redman in New York. Weekly, they traded artwork via email that served as both an update on each other’s lives and a commentary on the different, yet similar, worlds around them. The 14 resulting works are rife with double entendres, often including plays on words or forms, and the pieces provide a happy disjuncture between what is meant and what is perceived.

Karl Maier and Craig Redman met in Brisbane, lived together in Sydney and now reside on opposite sides of the world. They are part of a design collective called Rinzen and together have recently worked on projects for brands like Apple and Louis Vuitton, across the mediums of illustration, sculpture, typography, print and textile design. Individually Craig just closed an exhibition called ‘A Miserable Day To You Too’ at colette, Paris, and Karl currently has work on show as part of ‘More is a Bore’ at Ship of Fools gallery in The Netherlands.

		SUMMARY:Infinite Nature
LOCATION:Gorker Gallery 395 Gore Street, Fitzroy, 3065, Victoria, Australia
		URL:http://niceproduce.com/events/infinite+nature
		DESCRIPTION:
Gorker Gallery and Element are proud to present Infinite Nature, an exhibition of new works and the first Melbourne solo exhibition by Sydney based artist Beastman. Influenced by the beauty and symbolism behind nature’s repetitive geometric patterns and its eternal struggle against man-made adversities, Beastman\\\'s tightly detailed, symmetrical paintings depict a parallel world of hope and survival inhabited by his scaly-skinned, beastlike yet beautiful and emotive characters. Gripped by fear, anger, stress, confusion and paranoia, these instantly recognisable and loveable creatures reflect human nature and the everyday burdens and struggles of life that mankind so easily and continuously finds itself lost in. Beauty. Battle. Death. Repeat. This is Infinite Nature.

Founder and editor of the Australian online art publication [weAREtheIMAGEmakers], Beastman has exhibited extensively throughout Australia, as well as London, Berlin and New Zealand, he has curated and organised numerous art exhibitions and events, and has designed skateboards and graphics for various brands including Element, Folklore and Mingo Lamberti. With features in publications such as Empty, Tees, Deadbeat, Oyster, Spitpress, Australian Creative and more, and a recent profile on ABC’s Rush TV, you can be sure this won’t be the last you’ll see of Beastman, one of the most distinctive, prolific and hardest working emerging artists in Australia.

		DESCRIPTION:
Bonsai (Scottie Neoh), Oh54 (Paul Milecharane), Nails (Niels Oeltjen), and Twoone (Hiroyasu Tsuri) are Wooden
Foundations. Sharing the common bond of the spray can, these artists have each developed vibrant art and design
practices. For this show they will create an installation that explores artistic collaboration as an extension of
their street-based collabs, and the convergence of personal mythology into a group scenario, and anything
that the working process may bring along with it. As collectors of miscellany, and users of recycled material
LOCATION:China Heights L3, 16-28 Foster Street, Surry Hills, 2010, New South Wales, Australia
		URL:http://niceproduce.com/events/girls+n+cars
		DESCRIPTION:
China Heights is proud to present 'Girls N Cars', a photographic exhibition by Head On Portrait Prize winner for 2010, Fiona Wolf. The photographs illustrate the allure of barely dressed women and Australian muscle cars.

The series came together when Wolf was chasing bold cars around Australia and shooting classic, semi-nude portraits for her ongoing body of work, 'Girls In Undies'. This body of work meant capturing scarcely clothed women with an even sense of normality and subtle promiscuousness.

In her practice of editing, Wolf found parallels in the way she photographed cars and scantily clad women. The curves, shapes, moods and associations meant that the two subjects complemented each other perfectly. And so, in this exhibition, images of women and cars are presented next to each other to best honour their likeness and parity.

The hazy and sultry photographs in 'Girls N Cars' were shot on a Hasselblad 6x6 film camera. Neither the girls nor the cars have been retouched. They act as real relicts of their time.
SUMMARY:Meggs - King for a Day
		LOCATION:Backwoods Gallery 25 EASEY ST COLLINGWOOD VIC 3066, , , , Australia
		URL:http://niceproduce.com/events/meggs+-+king+for+a+day
		DESCRIPTION:
Backwoods Gallery is proud to announce its debut show by Meggs – ‘King for a Day’.

In his third Melbourne solo show (following his 2009 solo show in LA), Meggs continues to evoke strong themes of duality throughout his work.‘King for a Day’ is a new collection of paintings on wood and canvas, screenprints and installations, exploring personal duality, mortality and society’s obsession with fast-track fame and celebrity status.
‘King for a Day’ references the idea that contemporary media and social networking creates accelerated fame and the pifalls that come with celebrity resposibility and attention. The exhibition features works that energetically depict both the life & iminent death of those craving for power, wealth and fame.

Meggs began his career in street art and since developing his work for the gallery environment has garnered much international recognition. In 2009 Meggs exhibited a solo show in LA and has previously exhibited works in LA, London, Tokyo and Singapore. Early 2011 will see his first UK solo show with ZeroCool Gallery in London.

Please join us for the opening reception of ‘King for a Day’ by Meggs on Friday 25th June 2010, from 6pm.

All works are on paper and with a shared use of watercolour these two artists have much in common but take their art practice to different destinations.

		DESCRIPTION:
A Bit A History for y\'all:

Renowned Gallery Per Square Metre was started in 2006 to fill a gap in the commercial gallery market- that of an affordable, accessable, 100% artist run space. The main goals being to promote, inspire and motivate; underground, up-n-coming and amateur artists and help them break into the

commercial market.

Per Square Metre encourages INCLUSIVE creativity and is well respected in the scene due to their unpretentious skill sharing, knowledge and passion

for all people and things creative. As a studio, their prolific collaborative work in group murals and exhibitions is well known and sought after.

The Studio has housed artists such as Bernard Romerona, Dabs & Myla, Sear, Dvate,Porno, Ling, Mayo, Sigs and numerous other nomadic artists from Australia and around the globe.

The News:

On May 31st 2010, Per Square Metre will close its doors for the last time. Due to foreseen circumstances with dodgy landlords and the general gentrification of Collingwood, Per Square Metre is shutting up shop until a new suitable premises can be found to continue bringing you some light love and liquor.

The Show:

After four and a half years and over two hundred exhibitions by Australian and International artists, Per Square Metre is now closing its doors with this fitting last exhibition by co-owners and artists - Dvate and Sear.

Along with a few ‘special guests’ they will be showcasing a variety of new works, pushing the boundaries between graffiti and fine art. The show alone is already creating interest locally and overseas and with the added draw of being the final show at Per Square Metre it is sure to be an event not to be missed.

Will be launching on Friday the 20th of March.

Sorry about the wait everyone, but when faced with the incomplete venue, we had two choices, either push it back a few weeks and loose the momentum that the massive Melbourne show had or take a few extra months to update the show with new artists and give it a life of its own. We went with the later. It’s been allot of work, but it’s worth it and i think you’ll agree.

The shows going to launch at Red Bulls now complete gallery and true to the international dimension that No Comply has taken on, KR (Krink) will be heading down from NY to lay down some installations while Red Bull andNice Produce are going to throw a massive party.

Based simply on the amount of Melbourne artists, collectors, aficionados and nice family who’ve confirmed that they’ll be making the trip to to Sydney to be a part of the occasion its looking like it’s going to to get out of hand.

And for you, here are all the details.

LOCATION:Gorker Gallery 395 Gore Street, Fitzroy, 3065, Victoria, Australia
		URL:http://niceproduce.com/events/confessions+of+a+model+citizen
		DESCRIPTION:
Gorker Gallery is proud to present Confessions of a Model Citizen the new solo exhibition by the confronting and often controversial artist Ben Frost. Best known for his kaleidoscopic pop art and mash-up paintings Frost takes inspiration from areas as diverse as graffiti, collage, photorealism and sign-writing.

His painting ‘White Children Playing; Late 1900’s’ was deemed too controversial for some for its graphic depiction of children shooting-up drugs, and was debated recently on the Channel 7 Sunrise program. His now infamous 2000 exhibition and art prank ‘Ben Frost is Dead’ saw him fake his own death and was branded ‘tasteless’ when the art world and national media actually believed his demise.

Police have threatened to close every exhibition his 12m long collaborative painting ‘Where Do You Want to Go Today’ has been exhibited and a disgruntled viewer went so far as to slash one of the paintings with a knife in reaction to the confronting imagery. With a bold new body of work Frost is sure to delight, if not, disgust you with his new solo exhibition Confessions of a Model Citizen.

		SUMMARY:Meme
LOCATION:Guildford Lane Gallery Guildford Lane, Melbourne, 3000, Victoria, Australia
		URL:http://niceproduce.com/events/meme
		DESCRIPTION:
s the world grows bigger, it gets smaller. With every blog, news feed, TV show, download or instant message, ideas are transmitted and travel the globe in a single moment. From a cool catch-phrase to the latest fashion accessory seen in a movie, memes propagate themselves through cultures like a virus. Memes are the face of the connections that join us across nations and cultures. The Meme exhibition is a visual narrative of this connection by a collective of 5 Melbourne photographers who intersected through the landscape of new media. Stories from the streets of Singapore, through Kyoto, Nanjing, Phuket and Hong Kong to the beaches of St Kilda. Each work connects from one to another, weaving a story that begins and ends at any point. Meme exhibition opens at 7pm, on the 19th of June 2008, at Guildford Lane Gallery.

		SUMMARY:Shiney Space Junk
LOCATION:Paper Shadow 34 Franklin St, Melbourne, 3000, Victoria, Australia
		URL:http://niceproduce.com/events/shiney+space+junk
		DESCRIPTION:
Shiney Space Junk @ Paper Shadow A solo exhibition by JAGI I\'ve worked with Jagi for as far back as I can remember and I\'m extremely hosting his first show at Paper Shadow. James Greenaway\'s (or Jagi..) illustrative imagery is best described as pop-fantasy art, taking inspiration from manga, retro videogames, art nouveau and surrealism. Portrayed with these stylistic influences and within Jagi\'s worlds live giant, childlike, bionic samurai creatures, sometimes riddled with grief or floating around blissfully daydreaming, but always trapped and inseparable from their biomechanical armor. Bored and melancholic adventurers are found sitting a top floating platform game islands with rubix cubes and power-ups gathering dust nearby. These characters and landscapes are a reflection Jagi\'s youth, introvertedly spent drawing and designing platform and adventure video games in his sketchbooks. For better or for worse, he never really grew out of this habit of drawing, and now after decades of scribbling in sketchbooks, its time to make money! This show, the first solo exhibition by Jagi, contains a collection of 8 limited edition signed and numbered giclee prints, 8 original canvases and installations. Without sticking to any specific theme, these works simply reflect the emotion & imagination of Jagi while paying tribute to his predecessors & sources of inspiration. So proud to see this show come to fruition, Jagi has come along way and based on the talent and vision that he has I can\'t help but feel that its just the beginning.

		SUMMARY:Alter Egotism
LOCATION:Utopian Slumps 25 Easey St, Collingwood, 3066, Victoria, Australia
		URL:http://niceproduce.com/events/alter+egotism
		DESCRIPTION:
Meggs\' artwork reflects his background in graffiti art, illustration and design. Recognised for his stencils and aerosol art throughout the CBD and surrounding suburbs, Meggs has evolved his skills in painting, illustration and screen printing to explore his own unique style of character work from both wall to canvas. His work can be found predominantly around the streets of Melbourne, however has also travelled as far as London, Tokyo, Barcelona and Paris.

Meggs has contributed to numerous exhibitions such as Streetworks, May 2004 at Flinders Lane Gallery, Melbourne/Sydney Stencil Festival 2004/05/06, K-Swiss K-Spray Asia Tour, September 2005 and the No-Comply Festival at Federation Square 2007.

Some of Meggs\' early stencil work was recently acquired by the National Gallery of Australia as part of their permanent street art collection. A profiled artist in the book Melbourne: Stencil Graffiti Capitol, his artwork has also featured in numerous magazines and online zines. Meggs is also a member of the renowned Everfresh Studio, a unique collective of artists whose work spans from street art, murals, exhibitions and commissioned design projects.

Everfresh Studio recently hosted Backwoods, their first ever group exhibition, and possibly Melbourne\'s biggest ever street-art studio show, with an opening night attendance of over two thousand people. Alter Egotism is a collection of works inspired by confused conscience, juvenile indulgence and self-destructive behavior.

The works combine expressive textures and colours with character art and pop-references to explore the fundamental duality of self and Meggs\' particular fascination of the darker side of human nature. Meggs says; "In particular my work celebrates the role of villains in pop-culture and takes a tongue-in-cheek perspective of normally taboo acts of indulgence, anger and desire. I have always been intrigued by the villain whose personalities, characteristics and costume were much more interesting and elaborate than their seemingly more moral counterparts."

Power, violence, lust, sex, humour, masculinity and death are dominant themes throughout Meggs\' paintings which challenge nostalgic ideals of heroics and villainy in portraits and collages that reference Meggs\' childhood influences of cartoons, comics and graffiti art. "The works attempt to challenge any simplistic notion of \'good vs evil\' and express a personal struggle with my own, and others, moral judgments and social behaviors."

LOCATION:Until Never L2 3-5 Hosier Lane, Melbourne, 3000, Victoria, Australia

		DESCRIPTION:
Kill Pixie has recently been causing a stir in the Australian graffiti scene with his naive and idiosyncratic characters. Although his works appear in many private collections and previous exhibitions at Monster Children and China Heights, the best chance you have of spotting one of his creations is by keeping an eye out on the streets of his hometown, Sydney. Kill Pixie is terrified of sleep.

The grotesque notion that one might rest when they could be out painting the town 18 shades of inspiration doesn't sit well for the young infidel. Despite recent crackdowns on street artists, Kill Pixie continues to create spell binding imagery in some of the harbour city's seediest grottos. SUMMARY:The Beans
LOCATION:E-55 55 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne, 3000, Victoria, Australia
		URL:http://niceproduce.com/events/the+beans
		DESCRIPTION:
The Beans is the collective moniker of Melbourne artists Bonsai and Two. The pair have been working together harmoniously for a couple of years, summoning joyous, bright and colorful visions of fantasia into the world from a shared mind-space, Beans Land. As a rule to be broken, Two conjures the characters that populate Beans Land. Numbering among the exotic creatures and animals are flying fish, human-limbed elephants and deeply wise, knowing and serene mystic people. Bonsai sketches the landscapes - the world - that these characters color. It is a world of bouncing hillsides, flower-shaped clouds and cloud-like flora, with houses for Two\\\'s Beans-Landese to make their homes springing out from every-which-where. Taken together, each picture is an impression of the way The Beans see our world. Their dream, their imaginations.. their Beans Land. Where pigs can fly, Gods play in the streets with children, and snails impart profound insights into life and love in beautiful, rolling Spanish as you slowly fly by them, aback an enormous, ancient turtle. Each of their pieces feels as though you could walk inside it and become part of Beans Land. While most of their collaborative work has been spray-painting walls, they have explored other mediums and made them their own. The Beans aesthetic seems so fluid that it cannot help but envelope all art forms. Indeed, a city block or a kitchen sink designed by The Beans would make as much sense and be as artful as the works of paint-on-canvas in this exhibition.

The Beans intend this exhibition as an illustration and a celebration of just how well they work together. How perfectly matched their work is to each other\\\'s, as if it came to them from a shared place. As if they both heard the echo of an human-elephant\\\'s trumpeting call from somewhere outside of time and space. As if, upon hearing the echo, they both jumped - startled and curious - said, "Who\\\'s there..?" and found each other. More than that - illustration and celebration of their relationship - the exhibition is also an invitation for you to see and hear these things; to enter this world. Come to Beans Land!

		SUMMARY:100k Melbourne
LOCATION:Bus Studio Gallery 117 Little Lonsdale St, Melbourne, 3000, Victoria, Australia
		URL:http://niceproduce.com/events/100k+melbourne
		DESCRIPTION:
Reka takes his 100k show back home to where it's all really happening, Melbourne. Launching at bus gallery on the 29th of August, reka's solo show promises to offer more than just the usual Melb crew of trendy morons pretending to know whats up so they can get to the free bar, the show itself will be a definitive collection by one of Melbournes most predominant and influential young artists. "100K" aligns with the central thematic tone of black ink drawings that dominates this dynamic show. The work features strong linkages to line work and highlights imagery in its purest form. This exhibition will feature work Reka has created, drawn from inspirational influences such as anime and the work of tattoo art. The drawings are entirely drawn in black ink with bold and divergent lines, natural and organic in style and leaning heavily on the graffiti roots of Reka. In creating this exhibition, Reka has drawn inspiration from his Melbourne street roots, tribal and ancient Japanese patterns while still adhering to a cartoon and graffiti core. This influence is blended with themes and designs from animation and the stimulus of the earlier works of Keith Haring, Basquiat and the "pop art" movement. Reka is well known for his unique tribal and ancient aesthetic character design, a representation of the human figure in a street form. In this exhibition, using the medium of "100K" and moving from his street art background, he embraces tribal shapes and designs and morphs them into natural forms. These are reminiscent of animals, leaves, flowers and trees and the interpretation of the human form in various states. In his previous works and exhibitions, Reka has used colour and bold shape and form to engross the observer in his characters and his collaborative works feature this distinct style. Now, in a successful divergence into the more structured Melbourne art scene, Reka has established the "100K" exhibition that showcases the organic patterns of natural forms in this distinct black ink style. 117 Lt Lonsdale Street Melbourne CBD

		SUMMARY:The Adventures of Chazno
LOCATION:Cherry Tree Hotel 53 Balmain, Cremorne, 3121, Victoria, Australia
		URL:http://niceproduce.com/events/the+adventures+of+chazno
		DESCRIPTION:
This show is a bookmark in the story of Chazno G Fresh. About six years ago I did the first illustration of Chazno (the character) whilst I was supposed to be doing some boring arse job, I think I was counting cars or something for some company, anyway it sucked. So I made up this character which I thought was cool as, and was kind of my alter ego, or so I joked. I ended up doing some paintings with him in them early on.

I remember thinking I wanted to break away from graffiti a bit, but not knowing what to paint or like which direction to go in, I think this seemed like a good start. I guess I still don't know what I'm doing really,(a bit like Chazno) but I just keep trying to stay creative, weather it be painting a wall, train, canvas, or doing the clothing label. It's all art and it's just another way of getting up. I want people to see who Chazno is you know, see what he's all about, what the label's about. It's all a bit of fun, I don't take myself too seriously, and that's what I'm trying to bring across in my paintings and in my clothing. So come and check out what it's all about.

		SUMMARY:Couture Dreaming
LOCATION:Flinders Lane Gallery Level 1, 137 Flinders LaneMelbourne, 3000, Victoria, Australia
		URL:http://niceproduce.com/events/couture+dreaming
		DESCRIPTION:
Candy Spender has pulled together eight other designers of fashion extraordinaire, with a brief to break the paradigm of the so-called what's-hot or what's-cool-now syndrome. For this exhibition each designer is more interested in expressing that part of thier work where the muse first dances in: that moment of inspiration, where one forgets what, when or how much this piece will cost, or who will wear it. We are dealing with art from the heart, these are pieces, which would usually get chopped, tucked or modified in such a way that they can be digested by the market place. Here they will be revealed in their entirety. Nothing is at stake, other than our own aesthetic integrity. Couture Dreaming is a playground where art and fashion swing together in a sometimes precarious, but always-adventurous realization.

		SUMMARY:Wooden Toy Launch Party!
LOCATION:St. Jeromes 7 Caledonian Lane, Melbourne, 3000, Victoria, Australia
		URL:http://niceproduce.com/events/wooden+toy+launch+party%21
		DESCRIPTION:
Issue One is upon us. So come basque with us in the fruits of our labour of love. After a year and a bit of juggling, tape cutting and walking blindly across the tightrope towards the light, it seems that we have reached the little platform on the other side. It's now time for us to take the face paint off, put the lion back in the cage and start training a new animal Space travel. So, merge with us as we sip, swing and frolic to the sounds of Monkey the Merciless and wonder at the sights of freshly juiced artwork by Bonsai and Two on the famous Rancho wall'. Like two friends separated by a cold war we will laugh as we meet, cry as we are separated, and then laugh again as we are reunited over cold Brazilian Brahma (going cheap ;). If you are the violent type, come along. We plan on bashin' Pinata on the night, in front of a live audience. He's full of it and we've had enough. The punter who hits him the hardest will get to take his insides home with them in a bag! And the fun doesn't stop there - come marvel at the live Chilean two legged bongo player - he's perfect for those awkward interlude parts of the night where people usually stand around looking at their feet between sets. Nobody likes to look awkward. *Disclaimer: Management reserves the right to refuse entry to anybody bearing the unfortunate name of 'Pinata' or similar. www.woodentoymagazine.com

		SUMMARY:Plastic Pimps
LOCATION:Betula 239 Flinders Lane, Melbourne, 3000, Victoria, Australia
		URL:http://niceproduce.com/events/plastic+pimps
		DESCRIPTION:
Plastic Pimps: The Qee Sessions, the first of many customised figure and toy exhibitions in Melbourne and Australia, hosted by A.I and Koan with the focused on promoting the Australian street culture scene to the world while also expanding the general awareness of the coolness of toys.

Sponsored by shadow it features 43 of the best contemporary artists in Australia busting their style on Qees, vinyl toys made by Hong Kong-based company Toy2R. The show came about when toy collector, artist and organiser, Matthew Younger decided he wanted to see what his peers could do with the blank 8-inch toys, which come in the forms of Bear, Cat, Monkey, Dog and Toyer, by painting, molding or mutilating them. 'Vinyl toys are huge on the international scene,' says Younger. 'Artists such as Shepherd Fairey, Dalek, Fafi and Tim Biskup have designed Qees, but Australia seems to have missed out somehow.

We have some of the best and most unique street art in the world and I wanted to show that off.' The artist line-up for the show includes big names such as: Merda, Reka, Phibs, JeremyVille, and A.I, as well as a few select up-and-coming artists. 'The fun part about it is that the list of artists is so diverse. They come from different places and have different backgrounds. Most of the artists come from Melbourne, but we have artists from all over the country including New South Wales, South Australia and Tasmania. There are stencil artists and graphic designers and one of the guys is a tattoo artist.'

Plastic Pimps The 43 Qees will be exhibited at China Heights Gallery in Sydney (L3, 16-28 Foster St, Surry Hills) from 16th to 19th of February and at Betuna in Melbourne (239 Flinders Lane, Melbourne) from 3rd to 17th of March. The Qees will be sold via the Exhibitions and after available on www.NiceProduce.com.

Music will be provided by DJ Cammo Rhyme and dub step and the Amazing Lord Monkey playing funk afro brazilan tunes. 'We want everyone to come along and have a good time, and most importantly support Australian art,' Younger says. The Qees are 8-inch vinyl toys that come in various forms and made by Hong Kong-based company, Toy2R. Each of the artists has been given a blank Qee to use as a three-dimensional canvas The show came about because organizer, Matthew Younger, had seen what all these international artists where doing with this medium and decided to see what his peers could do with the toys. That these shows have been done overseas and entered into by many big-name artists.
