No Comply Hip-Hop Festival
Event concluded on 3rd September, 2005
No Comply is a National Skateboard Art Exhibition founded by the Koan Design Collective (Melbourne) in 2004. The second exhibition was a showcase of 100 individual skateboard designs, produced by 30 of Australia’s most influential artists, designers and illustrators. Geared towards the design community, the Melbourne show of no comply 2 was an opportunity for many people to see some of their favorite artists together in one spot and review the developments of the general art scene in the past year.
Before continuing to Sydney, No Comply will be making another stop in Tasmania as the center point of a festival aimed at a different community.
NO COMPLY in Burnie
More exciting then a pile of woodchips! The No Comply event in Burnie was not only a skateboard exhibition, it was a massive showcase of popular youth culture. It was unusual for an event like this to happen in Burnie, and this particular event did not happening without a very specific agenda.
Motivation behind Burnie No Comply
Burnie is subject to some frightening statistics including some of the highest rates of youth suicide in Australia. Coincidentally it also has extremely high rates of drug abuse, car accidents involving young people, teen pregnancies, vandalism and violence. These types of behavior and activities are usually associated with how young people will spend their ‘free time’-when they’re not at work or in school.
How young people choose to use their ‘free time’ will be determined by the options available to them. The primary objective of the Burnie No Comply event is to demonstrate how the skateboarding culture – and other popular youth cultures a like, graffiti and music, can provide a mechanism to captivate the interests of young people, engage young people in their community and provide a positive influence on their development.
It is our goal to aid and promote the development of popular youth cultures in areas like Burnie that are experiencing the effects of Marginalisation.
MOST IMPORTANTLY... Our main agenda was to have a MAD-SUPA-SILLY-CRAZY-SUPAFUN-MEGA-MEGA-ULTRA- CRAZY-SILLY CRAZY FUN DAY!!!
And that we did.
Check the photos bitches.
