Darco - Code Art
Event concluded on 31st October, 2006
Darco
Only a few of the original graffiti kings have remained actively painting since hip-hops global genesis. But Darco from the European city of Paris has done that and more.
One of the founding fathers of the Euro scene he was instrumental in defining its style. A founding member of
the legendary crew FBI with notable writers like, Loomit, Neon, Bomber, Chintz, Daim, Gawky etc, he is also a member of the American crew United Artists and Australian crew 21st Century. Darco has constantly pushed the 26 letters of the alphabet into infinite combinations of complex design. A global forerunner of ‘cali-graffiti’ he has promoted, encouraged and burned on every corner of the globe.
This year sees Darco touring the land of Australia, with exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, not to
mention burner murals on walls throughout the continent. Mixing old school foundation and innovating the prophetic, come and witness the funk of a true graff legend.
'When I could not even spell the word 'graffiti' he had already painted murals in Paris, Munich and NYC" –CanTwo
"He is an inspiration to me as well as countless others.
He is a dope writer and he's still going. I admire that"-Tkid
“A virtuoso master of wildstyle” – Henry Chalfant
Background > The Australian tour would coincide with the sale of the book 'Darco: Code Art' the 3rd in the Wasted Talent series from out of Europe. Darco is one of the main fathers of Euro graff scene, and has pretty
much defined the Parisian style.
He was instrumental in creating the worldwide graff networks, and is supported by some of the original graff kings from New York; such as Seen, Tkid and Poem. He has toured quite extensively over the years and has developed a strong relationship and a lot of respect from the Australian hip-hop community. He's done numerous commissions throughout the world, and has done some very high profile ones in Paris such as in the Louvre.
Bio > Born in Germany in 1968, Darco was raised in the Paris suburbs where, at the beginning of the 80s, he became interested in Graffiti and he quickly developed a personal style that was in many ways similar to “3D” graphic art notably in the way he outlined his work. A Graffiti pioneer in France, he specialized in lettering, and quickly became a trend-setter for a whole generation of European artists. A leading-light in the Graffiti world, Darco was one of the first writers to vindicate and assume total responsibility for his status as artist/author.
Since 1984, Darco has left his name in spray paint on every surface he considered worthy of his mark and in just a handful of years he has become the leading trendsetter in European graffiti styles. Rigorously aesthetical and a true devotee of writing and lettering, Darco is a forerunner whose tortured style combines a burgeoning creativeness with typical Germanic meticulousness. Of Franco-German origins, Darco is an international graffiti artist who has traveled worldwide on a quasi-mystical quest for the perfect letter.
